I'll be gone for a couple weeks, rafting, hiking, biking, and driving my way through the Southwestern United States. Oh yes, lots and lots of driving: Colorado, Utah, Arizona, California.
The good: Everything is nice and spaced out so we won't be rushing to get from point to point. It's sure to be exciting, gorgeous and a great way to see parts of the country.
The bad: I surely won't have internet access, probably won't have regular cell service. So I won't be posting to the blog, checking phone messages, or checking my e-mail while I'm gone.
Road trips are tricky, but I'm employing some healthy tools to ensure I stay on the right track:
- Wear sunscreen, even when driving. Re-apply it every hour or two. Don't forget to put it on your ears, nose, and anything that sticks out.
- Bring snacks with you, because you never know when you'll become hangry. Hangry = hungry/angry, when you're starving and you'll eat everything in sight. I'm bringing clif bars to the airport and stocking up on thick-skinned fruits for camping (they don't bruise as easily).
- Water. Water. Water. It's summer, it's hot. I drink tons of water, but only when I see it and know it's nearby. I'll be taking my Nalgene bottle everywhere.
- Relax. Flat tires happen, traffic happens, life happens. Be present and in the moment, and find something to appreciate. "Hey, I'm stuck in traffic but at least my AC works".
- Wake up early so you can beat the heat. When it's THAT hot out you don't want to go bike riding at noon. I've tried, and given up shortly afterward. The early bird gets the great workout, not heatstroke.
- Possibly my most challenging tip: Dress appropriately. It's hot as heck, I'll want to wear as little as possible. Short shorts and spaghetti straps are OK when it's 90 degrees. Fashion can wait until it cools down a bit.
